- Connected Learner | Technology Coaching
Connected Learner Coaches model the ISTE Standards for Students and the ISTE Standards for Educators and identify ways to improve their coaching practice. ISTE Standards for Coaches (2017). https://www.iste.org/standards/iste-standards-for-coaches The first time creating a lesson plan with standards is not easy, and that is why it’s important to review them prior to setting goals, the standards can even inspire projects to meet the requirement. Standards also help validate that students and teachers are heading down the right path. Recent technological advances have affected many areas of our lives, including the way we communicate, collaborate, learn, and, of course, teach. Those advances necessitate an expansion of our vocabulary, producing definitions such as digital natives, digital immigrants, and 21st century educators (Palmer, 2015). As 21st century educators we must equip our students with the skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. Palmer, T. (2015, June 20). 15 Characteristics of a 21st-century teacher. - Professional Learning Facilitator | Technology Coaching
Professional Learning Facilitator Coaches plan, provide, and evaluate the impact of professional learning for educators and leaders to use technology to advance teaching and learning. ISTE Standards for Coaches (2017). https://www.iste.org/standards/iste-standards-for-coaches Professional Learning Network Why does PLN matter? Each day is a chance to learn and grow, many share this sentiment with our students, but we also need to embody and model this action to them. Professional learning provides that opportunity, especially with the advances in technology increasing. “A PLN is a network of people and resources that support ongoing learning (Morris, 2018).” The idea of taking charge of PD, or professional development, for one’s own growth and success, is necessary. Each year we get a new group of students and what worked one year, might not work for the following year. Let’s take classroom management techniques that may need tweaking for the new group of students coming this year, but your workplace might have scheduled for later in the year. A teacher should not let her classroom be all haywire and out of control until then. We all know that with the pandemic of 2020 our students lost valuable time at school (Fisher, et al., 2020). We must play catch up in a way and basically, retrain and organize ourselves and them into the structure it once was, but this leaves room to do it even better and provide more engagement with technology usage. Three strategies that could easily be implemented with any subject are making connections, making accurate and inspiring content with technology, and making the time, as it will be worth it at the end of the day. This can help an educator improve their classroom and create a tool to fall back on when they need to refresh their minds on a topic or project and help others in the same boat. Fisher, D., Frey, N., and Hattie, J. (2020). The distance learning playbook, grades K-12: Teaching for engagement and impact in any setting (1st ed.). Corwin. - Change Agent | Technology Coaching
Change Agent Coaches inspire educators and leaders to use technology to create equitable and ongoing access to high-quality learning. ISTE Standards for Coaches (2017). https://www.iste.org/standards/iste-standards-for-coaches Philosophy We need to reign in technology, because it is a wild beast at this moment, and use it for educational purposes, but this requires a team effort on behalf of the teachers, admin, students, and parents. Students should only have technology at school for learning and on the weekends for reinforcement of what they covered in sch ool. MY RESPONSE : When students get home after school all electronic devices should be taken or hidden from the students and in replacement of screens time they can do a puzzle, read a book, color, or work on other hands-on non-electronic activities that help build their critical thinking and enrich their lives. MY REASONING: In the statement of faith and work, it states “God place d human b eings in this world and made us responsible for cultivating and caring for creatio n” (GCU, 2020). That doesn’t just apply to animal rights, in the field of education it means the students and their families. It took me 4 years of being in the education field to finally understand, that we not only teach students but parents as well. I found that so ridiculous my first year of teaching, now I understand because some families do not have the resources or access to higher education to know any better. Ignorance is not an excuse for us, and we must educate those within our reach with respect and love, just as Jesus taught his disciples and all those within his reach. MY ADVICE: One way to engage in professional learning networks is to find virtual and local training in the subject and try to communicate with others in different states or regions of the world doing the same subject. Recently, there was a virtual Scratch seminar and there were educators from Mexico and Germany, and in another virtual training for Minecraft the train er was live from Australia, those were amazing opportunities to establish contacts for future courses and lessons, if done with a PLN mindset. We must take advantage of future opportunities and share through online portfolios such as this and even future professional development training.
